Winter is normally a slow time for photography. It doesn’t have to be but I tend to not go out as much and there are usually fewer events to photograph as well. I did pro basketball the past couple of years which was most of what I shot during the winter. But this year… in the middle of a pandemic, has been brutal for my photography. We’ve been in near lockdown since early January. Who to photograph?

The pandemic situation has been getting better around here the past weeks, a nice weekend was announcing itself so a friend asked me to photograph her son’s hockey team.

To keep within our new social distancing norms, they organize a photoshoot outside with the kids.

I wasn’t too sure how to take this on, we planned for late afternoon timing with the sun going down. Which turned out to be a great idea.

The setup

I wasn’t sure how I’d set up for the shoot outside. I have a large black backdrop I thought I could set up down the patio’s edge. The problem was that the setting sun would shine right at that spot. I brought my diffuser to block the sun if needed but when I got there we figured it would be even better to set the lights and backdrop under the deck blocking all the sunlight and giving me enough space for my lights.

I’ve set up two lights for the formal shots, the main in an umbrella and a soft secondary light to fill some of the shadows.

After the formal shoot, the kids played some 3 vs 3 hockey on the outdoor rink while I shot some action shots. The sun was just passing the distant tree line, making for a warm and dramatic light on the players.

It was fun to be out there and make photos of people again.

I'm pretty pleased about how those came out, these were taken outside and not in an indoor studio.

The light just before sunset was amazing, couldn't have asked for better.
